“How would you like to be fired like this?”
A donut At one major multinational communications company that is Canadian based, they called my whole department including the department head in to a conference room, where a phone was set up without any other personnel from the company were present.

The phone rang and the department head answered it. He was told to put the call on speaker phone and in in a one minute statement the voice at the other end told us we were all layed off immediately with one weeks severance per yaer of service and to clean out our dseks and leave. That was it! NICE COMPANY! LINK

“My door is better than your door”
A donut I worked for a small stand-alone operation within a large multi-national corporation. Our 1,000 square foot front office building had 10 people working in it with our GM's office in the corner.

The GM was in over his head in every way except when it came to whom he made friends with at Corporate. Eventually his friendships paid off and he got promoted to Vice President. Now a big shot, he needed special treatment. No longer could he walk in the front door with all of the "little people." He had carpenters cut a hole in the side of the building and put in a door so he could have his own private entrance to his office. LINK

“The Idiot Go-Between Supervisor”
A donut I worked in credit card dispute resolutions for a mid sized bank. Customers would complain about an unknown charge on their credit cards and it was my job to investigate and report back to them. This usually took about 30 days. I was at the behest of the credit card providers, not the bank's rules, hence the 30 day turn around time.

Our team was running smoothly until they appointed a new Team Leader and shunted our much beloved usual team leader sideways. This woman was a nightmare. She would hold weekly meetings and tell us all the new procedures that would be implemented, most of which ran contrary to the smooth operation of the team. She was clearly a corporate climber and had a nasty attitude to boot. She would always ask for questions or comments, but she'd trained everyone to be so scared of her reaction that nobody would put up their hands. At the end of the meetings, she would say, "Good work, Team. You're all STARS!!!!"

Upper management wanted to save costs, so they did a review of everyone's job. We were all on contracts so we were cheap fodder anyway. I liked my job until her underling/moron lackey/team leader wannabe was appointed to do an audit of my job. I tried to explain to him over many meetings why some months had a lot of disputes resolved and other months didn't. He JUST.DID.NOT.GET the concept that the disputes were clocked at 30 days from the day I received them, not 30 days from the 1st of each month.

Each meeting with him would find me getting frustrated constantly having to justify my work ethic (which is quite substantial) and him not understanding my plain English explanations.

In the end, it was decided that I wasn't good enough at my job and my contract wasn't renewed. I heard they ended up giving my job to a girl who was completely lazy and spent most of her time on the phone to her boyfriend. Meanwhile, my perfect turn around record was reduced to at least 280 disputes outstanding longer than 90 days! What happened then? The credit card providers ended up following their rules and denying anything older than 30 days and the bank wearing the costs of the dispute as they tried to keep their customers happy.

I went on to greener pastures and lived a happy corporate life. I ended up finding out from old work colleagues that the corporate climbing Team Leader lost her job in the downsize. LINK

“Just your average evil small business...”
A donut I was desperate for a job and started working at a place that SEEMED ok at first, but I soon discovered that almost every 3 months exactly they would either fire someone or force someone to quit...often for no reason at all excepted they didn't think the person was a "team player."

The first person to leave was a guy who was there only a couple weeks. He quit claiming issues related to his wife but I think he hated the job.

The next person to go was a temp who ran off to Greece as a college exchange student. Lucky her. She didn't really like the place either.

The next person to go was a guy who was there to replace the other guy who quit...he was fired for not being a "team player" because he stopped working hard after he realized he was being force to do the work of 3 people for 1/2 the pay of one person.

The next person to go was a girl who was hired around the same time as the guy who was supposed to replace the other guy. She quit, claiming she needed to move to stay closer to her boyfriend, but I knew she hated working at our company and thought the company was evil and unfair.

The next person to go was a crazy creepy, bossy person who nobody liked anyway...Again they didn't like her attitude so she was fired.

The next person to go was a guy they hired to replace the girl who quit and the guy who was fired. They claimed he just "didn't get it" and fired him for not being fast or smart enough to work 2 jobs for very poor pay.

The next person to go was again the person who was hired to replace the guy who was hired to replace the first guy. He quit saying the company was unethical, didn't treat their employees right, lied to their customers and were stingy and rude (all of these things turned out to be true).

The next person to go was actually the first person they hired. They forced her to quit, threatening to fire her if she didn't leave. They also claimed she wasn't a "team player" and wasn't there for the right reasons. They said they'd give her a good reference if she quit and when she did leave I overheard them in their office give her a bad reference when someone had just called in to ask them for a job verification for her.

The next person to go was the person they hired to replace the person they hired first as well as the person that they fired who was replacing the other guys who were fired. She quit in anger because they didn't pay her the benefits and pay they had promised and were making her work three jobs at once and would yell at her and treat her poorly.

Finally I quit just before they had announced they were going to lay me off and take the company in a "new direction"

This all happened in the period of 12 months. They started with 3 employees, expanded at one point to 7, and then ended up with zero and had to go out of business after firing 3 people, having 3 walk out on them and 4 quit out of anger or threats of being fired by the company. All this happened because the company didn't want to treat their employees and customers right.

Man was it a trip just sitting back in my office watching all of the fights and firings unfold. And man I feared for my job everyday I was there. Out of respect for my fellow employees I held a F*ck (insert company name here) party where I brought everyone together to celebrate not having to work for the evil company anymore. People who had never worked at the company at the same time got to meet for the first time and everyone had a blast! LINK

“"Dont be so thin skinned"”
A donut In my office there is a person who worked for the boss for about 10 years. This person has a habit of having screaming fits. If you try to explain a situation to her, and she jumps ahead of you, thinking she knows what you are about to say. She will cut you off, and never allow you to complete a sentence to explain that the issue she thought you were heading for it not the actual issue. Just last week she had a screaming temper tantrum in the hallway that was heard all over the building.

She has referred to her superiors as "idiots who know nothing," bullied her coworkers, and was actually listed as the sole reason one of her employees needed mental health leave.

Now reports are that major CEO's and customers are thinking about canning the main supervisor because he won't address issues that are specifically in this person's control. However, he continues to defend her.

The main supervisor responds to every complaint about her by telling the reporting employee, "You just need to be less thin-skinned."

Last week, I was told to stop coddling customers, after this woman complained that I was too easy on them. The most fascinating part, we'd just come out of a meeting where the boss had specifically stated that we needed to focus all our energy on customer recruitment and retention. LINK
